Sasha - Renaissance Rls Date 2009-05-11

by citybeat on May.03, 2009, under Reviews

Sasha - Renaissance

Artist: Sasha
Label : Renaissance
Released: 2009-05-11
Source Beatport
Type: Single/Vinyl

When such names team up there’s nothing more you can wish for. Widely regarded as one of THE finest moments on Invol2ver, Sasha’s eagerly anticipated Lowlife gets its official release alongside unreleased parent Highlife. Few people know that the track is a sibling of the original version created by London singer-songwriter Adam Parker, but Sasha has turned his cut info a very remarkable track.

The collaboration itself came about in the purest sense, following a tape of ‘Highlife’ being handed to Sasha through a mutual friend. The result was the Invol2ver remix, but as we now know, it never made its way to the final tracklist…

“Even though we’d completed the remix, we were still playing round with the vocal in the studio,” explains Sasha, “We soon realised samples of it married to an original instrumental production Barry, Duncan, Charlie and I had been developing. Adam’s vocal completed the track perfectly.”

As ‘Highlife’ didn’t make the final cut, the COMA collective all agreed a suitable credit was required to acknowledge its heritage and the aptly named ‘Lowlife’ was born as Sasha elaborates:

“It was kind of sad, having to choose between the two come the final selection for the comp’, so it was only right we gave a nod to the vocal’s source in the title. Although tough at the time, I guess if we hadn’t gone through that we wouldn’t be in the position to present them together - a totally exclusive, unheard remix and Adam’s original.”

Completing the package is Adam Parker’s original version that kick-started it all, a haunting piece of pop-electronica that many dance fans will be interested in, both as a fantastic listening piece and reference.

Sasha vs Adam Parker – The Highlife EP will be available from 11th May via Beatport

No sex please, We’re footballers

by citybeat on Apr.25, 2009, under News

A new study of British blokes’ interests has revealed that 30% think more about football than sex each day, with eight percent admitting they love soccer more than their partners.

The survey for Sports Interactive and Sega revealed that 58% dream about football for at least one hour a day compared to 44% musing about sex.

“Traditionally, it is well documented that men think about sex all the time,” Sports Interactive spokesman Miles Jacobson told the Daily Record, “But this research proves that men are more obsessed with the beautiful game than they are with the fairer sex.”

The poll also revealed that Chelsea supporters typically think about their team 90 times a day, which presumably includes superstar supporter Paul Oakenfold. The LA based DJ was interviewed recently by supporter fanzine Chelsea Chelsea while several years ago admitted his most memorable gig was playing at a private party for the football team in Hollywood.

“I won’t stay in any hotel unless it’s got football or access to the games,” Oakey also told Mixmag several years ago. “It’s part of being English. I’m proud of being English,” he added.

Kiss and tell footballer girlfriend Francesca Sawyer, 22, memorably shed light on the players’ interests and tastes in an interview with the Sun last year, revealing careful planning was required to meet them and get close.

“You need to know which clubs to go to. In London it’s Kabaret on a Monday, Funky Buddha on a Tuesday, Chinawhite on a Wednesday and Movida on a Thursday. At the weekend it’s anywhere in Kensington, like Amika or Boujis,” she revealed.

“You need to know a club promoter in order to get seated at the best table or in the VIP area,” she added, “You don’t want to be a muggle - one of the common folk on the main floor.”

Uncommonly canny cake thieves also took advantage of footballers’ well known wealth last February by stealing a birthday cake belonging to Liverpool player Jamie Carragher which they then photographed and returned to him with a ransom note and piece of cake.

“We cut this bit off,” the note reportedly said, “If you want to see the rest, phone this number.”(Sunday Times)

by citybeat on Apr.25, 2009, under Events

SATURDAY 30TH MAY 2009
GOODGREEF
GLOBAL SOUNDTRACK
MAIN ARENA
WITH DJS
ALY & FILA
(voted no31 dj mag top 100/egypt)

Aly Amr Fathalah (Aly) and Fadi Wassef Naguib (Fila), the Egyptian duo, were both born in 1981 and have known each other since kindergarten. After falling in love with the music of Paul Van Dyk, Steve Helstrip and Chicane they built their first small studio and started doing electronic music and djing from 1999. After establishing themselves in Egypt they decided to go international. In 2002, they signed with the German record label, Euphonic Records. Their first release, “Eye of Horus” received huge airplay from the likes of Paul Van Dyk, Armin Van Buuren, DJ Tiësto, and many others. The track was licensed to Fundamental Recordings in Holland and reached number 4 position in the Dutch Dance charts.

After finishing their contract with Euphonic Records, Fila met with Andy Prinz and they decided to launch their first sublabel of Offshore. Upcoming Egyptian releases would follow. Their first release through Offshore Music Switzerland / AP Pro Audio “Spirit of Ka” made it on numerous playlists.

They have played alongside Armin Van Buuren in A State of Trance episode 300 and A State of Trance episode 350. They have been voted on DJ Mag. as one of the top 100 DJs in the world twice. Ended the year 2007 as number 111 as they finally break through the top 100 djs in 2008 reaching the 31st postion on the list.

MENNO DE JONG

Menno de Jong is a dj and producer from the Netherlands. His production & remix career has seen him record for some of Europe’s biggest trance labels and he’s the owner of lauded Dutch independent Intuition Recordings. A Podcast pioneer, he’s produced and presented the much respected and widely-syndicated Intuition Radio show for the last 3 years. As a DJ he’s closed gigs for Tiësto & Paul van Dyk, is currently ranked at No. 48 in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 Chart and has spun in over 25 countries.

Born into a musical family, it took very little time for Menno to start experimenting with the array of synths corralled in his father’s studio. His production career started in auspicious fashion in 2004 when ‘Guanxi’, his debut production was signed to Anjunabeats. As with studio production Menno also dabbled in DJing from an early age. At 17 he progressed from school discos & friends parties to a two year residency at an underground club in Eindhoven. Further charged by the reception ‘Guanxi’ received from DJs and still aged just 20 years old he threw himself into music nearly full-time, juggling his busy schedule with his studies at university. Double-header ‘Magma’/‘Momentum’ and ‘Sjamaan’ were released on Fundamental (in 2005 & 2007 respectively), while ‘Tundra’ (2005) and ‘Nolthando’/ ‘Solid State’ (2007) appeared on his own Intuition label. Remix-wise, he has re-scripted tracks for The Thrillseekers, Karen Overton & Mark Otten, amongst others and to ever-increasing acclaim.

Having now spun in over 25 countries, Menno has played at clubs and events such as Godskitchen, Gatecrasher, Creamfields, Trance Energy, Sensation White, Mysteryland, Amnesia in Ibiza, Love Parade in Berlin, The Gaudi Arena in Moscow & WMC in Miami. Alongside that he has DJed with the likes of Tiësto, Armin van Buuren, The Prodigy, Paul van Dyk, Marco V and Markus Schulz.

Following an inspiring tour of Africa, Menno broke into the compilation market in mid-2007. Mixing the first in a projected series of country-themed albums, Intuition Sessions Vol. 1: South Africa gathered together the cream of the label’s highly recognizable crop.

MARKUS SCHOSSOW

He became a well known DJ and producer by the release of the Tiesto Album In Search of Sunrise 6, in which his track Chase My Rabbit was featured.

For the international trance music industry he became interesting after Armin van Buuren presented his track Mr. White in his weekly radioshow A State Of Trance. The track Mr. White quickly became one of the most played tracks in 2007. Furthermore Marcus Schossow has collaborated with another Swedish producer Thomas Sagstad to create “Moog Me”, another progressive trance hit. Other collaborations include “Schossow & Brandlt - Horny” which is a remix of “Mouse T - Horny” and “Marcus Schossow & Thomas Sagstad - Crepuscolo”.

Marcus Schossow has a weekly radio show called Tone Diary, which he presents on the internet radio station “AH.FM”.

In 2009 Marcus became the first Swedish DJ to win the title of Most Popular Nordic DJ of 2008 from Megamin’s annual poll since 2004’s winner Airbase. He is the biggest climber in the poll’s history as well as the only Swedish DJ in the top 5 with 628 votes since in 2007 he only received 5 votes.

ACTIVA

Although he is primarily known as a producer, Rob has been DJing since his first experience with a pair of turntables while at school. He has gone on to play at the biggest nights in the UK including Gatecrasher and Passion and regularly travels the UK and often abroad to perform. He is a bi-monthly resident at easily the best and fastest growing night in the UK, Digital Society, where his late sets have become a popular part of the night showcasing the harder side of his style.

If that wasn’t enough, Rob also owns and runs Conspiracy Recordings along with Jon O’Bir and Kev Ribbens. The label, which has grown rapidly in the first few years, has had massive support from the biggest names in the industry including regular appearances on Armin’s ASOT, Above & Beyond’s TATW, VONYC Sessions, Sound garden as well as Radio 1 and various other FM radio support. The label has developed a reputation of showcasing brand new music from new artists, has helped kick start the careers of Tom Colontonio, Anguilla Project and Peter Martijn Wijnea, as well as releasing tracks from more well known artists like Ian Betts, Dan Stone and Peter Dafnous.

Moby releases his seventh studio album this Summer! “Wait For Me”

by citybeat on Apr.21, 2009, under News, Reviews

The various musical exploits of Moby should be sounds you have been in contact with over the past ten years since his world renowned ‘Play’ album. You should have heard a few of those tracks on numerous commercials back when it was released in the late 99. You should have certainly heard his old classic ‘Go’ as that’s been featured on more classic compilations that any record I can recall. His previous artist album ‘Last Night’ was only released last year and saw Moby return to his old style Electronic dance routes with some excellent productions.

The change with his brand new artist productions is very evident in the first single he’s released that will feature on the album. ‘Shot In The Back The Head’, as you might expect from the track title, is a very dark and mournful record with those thought provoking qualities about it. If you watch the video you could say it borders on the depressing with the black and white cartoon animation created by David Lynch fitting in with the mood of the single. I think it’s a very clear style change compared to his last album with it being describe as a more personal collection.

Moby is a very opinionated artists, probably one of the most outspoken character’s over the years in the Industry but his passion for making music is still very lively.

I recorded the album here in my studio on the lower east side(although ’studio’ always seems like an overly grand word for a bunch of equipment set up in a small bedroom). In the past I’ve worked in large and small studios, but for this record i wanted to record everything at home by myself.

I have some friends/guests singing on the record. they’re great singers, but unless you live in fort greene or washington heights you might not know about them, as they’re relatively unknown (because I’ve found that working with friends is almost always nicer than working with rockstars).

I started working on the album about a year ago, and the creative impetus behind the record was hearing a david lynch speech at bafta, in the UK.

David was talking about creativity, and to paraphrase, about how creativity in and of itself, and without market pressures, is fine and good.

It seems as if too often an artists or musicians or writers creative output is judged by how well it accommodates the marketplace, and how much market share it commands and how much money it generates.

In making this record I wanted to focus on making something that I loved, without really being concerned about how it might be received by the marketplace. as a result it’s a quieter and more melodic and more mournful and more personal record than some of the records i’ve made in the past.

It’s also, for better or worse, all homemade, in that i recorded it at home with my friends and drew the artwork with a black sharpie on copy paper.

The first single (if you can call an instrumental with no vocals that we’re giving away for free a ’single’) is called ’shot in the back of the head’, and I’m happy to announce that david lynch has done the video for it. i sent him the music and said, ‘please do whatever you want’. so he sat down and drew some animation that is very dark and beautiful. david lynch is my favourite film director, and I’m really happy to have him as the first video director on ‘wait for me’.

Moby

I like the new dark approach to his latest single and its always refreshing with Moby that he likes to produce music he likes without influence from others to change it here and there. It’s a fifteen track album and to hear the first single head over to Moby’s official web site.

The artists behind Märtini Brös are DJ Clé and Mike Vamp from Berlin. Both can be seen as pioneers of the electronic music movement in Germany and beyond since its early days end of the eightees.
