Deadmau5 brands all DJs ‘fucking cunts’
by citybeat on Nov.18, 2008, under News
Canadian club star Deadmau5 back-tracked from branding all DJs ‘fucking cunts’ this week, insisting he was only referring to those who fit ‘the concept that ‘I recognize as being a “disc jockey”’ in a recent interview with Ireland’s Daily Star.
“Let me start by admitting . . . I did not grow up in the EDM (electronic dance music) scene. I don’t consider my career to be about “being a DJ”. I don’t have “DJ roots”. I never had any intention of becoming a DJ,” he declared in a statement posted on his Myspace blog.
“And my conception of “DJ’s” in general from this standpoint has always been . . . being forced into some nightclub when I would have rather stayed home, and watch some dood (dude) mash the “play / stop” button and occasionally move a pitch slider. Love it or hate it, that’s just been my conception of the traditional “dj”,” he said.
“I’m not a total fucking idiot, and I recognize talent when I see it . . . and there are many talented DJ’s out there for sure,” he conceded.
Two weeks previously the Star quoted him as comparing DJs to ‘fucking lawyers’ (‘you need them but they’re fucking cunts’) adding that he was ‘bored to fucking tears’ with DJs and hoped they ‘will fucking go the way of the dinosaur’.
.
This week, however, he took the tabloid to task for ‘picking out all the stupid bits . . . to interview me about anything other than music . . . is stupid: Period’, to the consternation of Star Music editor (and acclaimed DJ) Mark Kavanagh.
“The headline (‘Deadmau hates DJs’) was my doing but that’s my job. I made the most out of the raw material he gave us,” Mark told Skrufff.
“He was a bit mean about our staff writer Ciara in his web postings about this afterwards, calling her a ‘random chick’ and making her out to have made the quotes up but we have the tape and she didn’t make anything up,” he continued.
“For the record, Ciara Cunnane is a reputable, full-time staff member at the Irish Daily Star (and reputable electro-rock DJ around Dublin) and has a copy of the interview on tape,” he said. “In fairness to Deadmau5, he’s just naïve about the media,” he added.
Judge Jules headlines the upcoming Trance Awards
by citybeat on Nov.18, 2008, under News
Judge Jules headlines the upcoming Trance Awards at Ministry Of Sound’s Gallery next weekend and chatting to Skrufff this week, suggested a simple explanation of the genre’s enduring popularity.
“Trance is the ultimate big room/arena sound, and therefore gets exposed to a very large audience at all the major events around the world, hence the large support in the polls,” said Jules.
The TrackItDown backed event also includes sets from upcoming Romanian star Claudia Cazacu, The Thrillseekers and Deepgroove with the awards being announced throughout the night.
Jules also chatted more about his upcoming artist album ‘Bring The Noise’ which includes a track co-produced with Skrufff chief Jonty Skrufff, Trainwreck.
“I’ve been featuring sections from Jonty’s essential weekly online news piece Skrufff on JudgeJules.net for many years, and we got friendly that way,” said Jules, explaining the connection.
“And I’ve watched his DJ career take off big-time, with tune-making the natural next step.”
Jules said the Nebular released record is ‘all trance influenced, with some more conventional trance offerings, plus slower and more techy trance, still with trance undertones’, with no hip hop elements despite its Public Enemy referencing title.
“I loved Public Enemy as a kid, but that wasn’t the influence,” said Jules, “To be honest, someone emailed me and suggested it,” he confessed.
