Robert Nickson - Artist Of The Week

by citybeat on May.29, 2008, under News

Robert Nickson

Robert’s background is a multi-national affair, father from England, mother from Norway, born in England and now living in Holland. But it’s Holland that has given him his musical influences. Holland is renowned for its Dance Music scene. His first production with Dave Masters “Masters & Nickson - 5th Dimension” was first picked up by Dutch legend Armin van Buuren who subsequently gave the listening world their first taste of Robert when he played “5th Dimension” on his weekly ID&T radio show, “A State of Trance” Armin loved the tune so much that he signed it as one of the first records to his Armada Music label. Receiving massive support from djs such as Paul van Dyk, Ferry Corsten and Dave Pearce, it was also featured on many compilations such as Godskitchen Worldwide.

Robert’s work has not gone unnoticed by those at the top. There’s no better sign of how well things are going than getting the support of artists such as Armin van Buuren, Paul van Dyk, Tiesto, Markus Schulz, Judge Jules, Above & Beyond and countless others who continue to support the work that he does.

Robert’s gig list has grown quicker than anything he had ever dreamed of and his air miles balance certainly looks healthy now. Robert has visited countries from afar rocking the dance floors of London to Los Angeles, Sydney to San Francisco and all over Europe. His DJ style is the same as his productions, giving audiences beautiful no nonsense trance. Robert’s energy behind the turntables is electric and you can be sure that wherever he spins, the masses will not be standing still. His monthly radio shows on DI.FM have been listened to by thousands and gaining more every month.

In 2007 Robert first released a track under his new guise “Nick Robertson”, called “Identity Crisis”. With a harder edge, this has received massive support from the likes of John O’Callaghan and Radio 1 support from Eddie Halliwell. Returning to the true trance sound he released a three track EP called “Motion Blur”, which has now been signed to an almost frightening number of compilations. Some of the DJ’ing highlights of the year included the massive San Francisco Love Fest, Oxygen in New Zealand and Digital Society in Leeds.

2008 has started of well with a remix for Deep Voices on Combined Forces, which has been a favourite with many DJ’s. Experimenting with a different sound he released “Narc” on Pilot6 Recordings with a Simon & Shaker Remix, which has received support from the likes of Tiesto and Ferry Corsten. Set for a release in May is his next single of the year called “Never Again”. It has now been tested and approved by handfull of lucky DJ’s. Also coming up is a re-release of “5th Dimension”, with an impressive Daniel Kandi Remix.

Currently Robert is working on more tracks and remixes, including a new “True Form” track. Also coming up later this year is a collab with Daniel Kandi!

“When you die and go to trance heaven, this is what they’ll be playing in the arrivals lounge” - Mixmag review of Spiral.

“If you ever have to explain to your parents what trance music is, play Spiral” - Armin van Buuren.

The Return of the Giant

by citybeat on May.29, 2008, under News

TUESDAYS AT AMNESIA

THE RETURN OF THE GIANT, ONLY THE GIANT JUST GOT BIGGER… MUCH BIGGER!

Dance music’s annual exodus to the infamous white isle is nigh! Ibiza 2008 is fast approaching and trance titans Armada return to the Balearic Mecca for their fifth year — bigger, bolder and better!

Joining Armada’s elite force, Tuesdays at Amnesia welcome a new player – ‘Contact’. Contact will rip up the terrace each week, inviting labels like the mighty Toolroom and Yoshitoshi along for the house music ride. It’s sole aim being to bring the most talented international DJs and producers together under one roof, thus creating a true Ibiza experience.

Armada is the one of the biggest forces in modern day dance music, boasting a back catalogue that no-one can rival, stellar artists, and is, of course, home to the No.1 DJ in the world – Armin Van Buuren.

Armin topped the world’s most important DJ poll — DJmag’s Top 100 — in October last year and this impending Ibiza season is his first as ruler of the DJ roost!

Exclusive to Armada at Amnesia, Armin will play a massive 11 weeks out of the 14-week season, during which he’ll record a very special ‘A State of Trance’ and command an ‘Armin Only’ event — certainly two of the many highlights coming your way this summer.

He’s joined by fellow heavyweight Markus Schulz, who’s vacating his Miami home for the entire season, soaking up 10 dates in Ibiza, as well as a non-stop tour of Europe.

The whole line up represents the very best in international DJ talent and includes: Markus Schulz, Marco V, ATB, Hernan Cattaneo, Sharam (DeepDish), Rank 1, Matthew Dekay, Menno De Jong, Blake Jarrell, John O’Callaghan, Gareth Emery, Glenn Morrison and many more.

On the terrace, Contact offers the perfect alternative to the main room, serving up sounds that will reach 130bpms and no more. Mark Knight’s Toolroom, Tocadisco and Deep Dish’s YoshiToshi throw their weight behind it — creating a ‘bang on the money’ terrace vibe.

Signed up so far are: Sharam, Mark Knight, Laidback Luke, Seb Fontaine, Tocadisco, Matthew Dekay, Martijn Ten Velden, Brian Cross, Richard Dinsdale, Cedric Gervais, Mar-T, Kurd Maverick and more.

Armada and Contact at Amnesia, is the force to be reckoned with in Ibiza this summer. When the clubbing world looks back on Ibiza 2008, we guarantee this will be the one night that shines bright above all others for the very best of reasons.
